Miss Modern Teaches | Brand Planning

Indecisiveness? Check. Fear of commitment? Check.

When any of my clients think they’re being too picky or choosy, I have to laugh. I can’t imagine how {bad} I would be. I change my branding as often I change my clothes…partly because I can, and partly because I like different things on different days.  I usually stick with the same clean fonts and change up other elements – but really, what message is this sending? I wouldn’t advise anyone else to do such a thing…

Don’t get me wrong – I’m all for change. But I’m also all for consistency, and I have to practice what I preach.

I admit it. I have a fear of commitment. Planning a brand takes insight as well as forethought, and, well, time. You have to look to the future or at least your future self – in a year are you going to want what’s hot right now? When I first started Deluxemodern {in 2005} it was all about vintage damask and scrapbook style. Not my thing at all. Thank goodness the clean look is “in” now, and technically it never goes out.

Anyway, let me get to the point: I’m planning a brand. Not just a “let me change my facebook timeline cover real quick,” but a BRAND. I don’t really have one, which is silly. I don’t have a logo. I have a million awesome variations of a logo, but a logo is a mark to identify your business – and I don’t have one.

Soon, Deluxemodern will have a new brand. I’m going to answer the deluxemodern questionnaire, create mood boards, and really think about it. We will also have new website, which is exciting since we haven’t posted a majority of our projects from the past year. Lots of new stuff to look at. The Dear Miss Modern Shop will also get a makeover and some fresh new products, and this here blog will be part of the revamp as well.

Here are the ingredients for a pulled together brand:

Logo | 2 Patterns | 2 or 3 Photos | Tagline | Blog Elements  | Color Palette | Font Palette   you know, give or take.

  • I think it’s funny that you don’t think you have a brand. I love the fact that you change your look often. To me, that is the sign of a great brand. You have a consistent look even though some of the elements change. It’s like your omnicer now. I get excited to see your new Facebook profile picture. I’m excited to see what you come up with.
