Miss Modern Teaches | Marketing is Like Flirting

Welcome to our very first Marketing Monday! We’re so glad you joined us, now get ready to roll up your sleeves.

Here’s the thing: we’ve been doing our homework, and can see that lots of you need help in this area.
Whether you have a full-time business that needs streamlining, or a hobby business you’d like to turn into a full time job, there are some simple steps that can help you look pro. If you are currently running a business, you most likely have an online presence. {If not, please get one, stat}.  This is a big job for anyone to tackle – a website, blog, facebook, twitter, ugh. How are you supposed to get any work done when you’re constantly having to worry about all this stuff?
The fact of the matter is that you HAVE to worry about this stuff, and you have to look good while worrying.
It’s doesn’t matter what type of business you’re in- photography,  floral design, event planning, real estate- you need good solid branding and you need to market yourself. Since the Deluxemodern team is immersed in these things daily, we feel confident that we can help. So let’s start at the beginning. Are you presenting yourself to the world in the best possible way?  For our very first Marketing Monday, we want {need} to stress the importance of your branding, and how important it is to keep it looking pulled together. We browse hundreds of different websites a day and so many of them have huge inconsistencies. Last week we saw one company with 4 completely different logos/looks for one business.  This is a big no-no. How can a potential client have confidence in your service if the first impression is completely scattered?

If your business has website, a blog, a splash page,  Facebook page, Twitter page, etc, there should be one logo / one look / one brand throughout. That’s why it’s called an identity after all. There are lots of fun ways to mix it up so you don’t get bored, but that’s another conversation. If you fall into the category of “over-branding”, then it’s time to take a step back. We get it. There are so many options out there: DIY design, billions of template shops, lots of designers,, and your sisters  friends’ cousin who’s going to design you a logo. It’s all just a lot to deal with. So here’s our advice: if you’re doing it yourself, keep it simple.

Imagine that you’re searching online for Starbucks, and come across a Starbucks page with a completely different logo and branding, and the colors were pink and blue. You would probably think you made a wrong turn and quickly hit the back arrow. Right? If you can’t afford to have a complete branding package done, this shouldn’t stop you from creating a seamless look across the web with printed materials to match. You can create a look that people will recognize, and build confidence in potential clients. you are.  If it doesn’t look like you have your marketing and brand together, future clients are going to think you don’t have your product or service together either.
But what if I can’t decide on a look? We have that problem too. It’s okay to change your branding, just make sure you change ALL of it, and and try to have it all come from the same voice. If you don’t have any branding at all and don’t have the budget for a custom or pre-made look, head over to dafont.com, fontsquirrel.com, fontspace.com, {or any other free font site} pick one you love, and type up your name.  Our clients tell us all the time that they book more business when they have their new brand in place, and this is because they look good, they look pulled together.
A good brand creates excitement, and marketing is really just flirting when it comes right down to it.
Take some time this week to look over your marketing pieces. Do they represent you well? Are they clean and polished? Is there anything you could do to refresh, refine, or simplify?  Think of it as marketing homework.
Deluxemodern finished this branding project for Gwendolyn Waite Photography this past fall. It’s a great example of clean, simple + beautiful. Congrats Gwen!
“I absolutely loved working with Christine. I was so excited to have her rebrand my business, and I have definitely seen more inquiries and bookings since I rebranded. I’m in love with my new look! Thanks, Christine!”
